You see … English learners are off the hook. So no wonder there’s trouble with English pronunciation and its spelling. Much of the above changes were kept and by the 1700s English writing was pretty much set. Thank goodness for printing presses in the late 1500s and 1600s because rules had to be established for printing.This was around the beginning of the 1500s. For example, pity was spelled six different ways. Written English became so mixed up that there were even different spellings for just one word.So, for instance, dette became debt to include the silent b to make it look more Latin, the language the word descended from. More brilliant people decided to write words to match their origin.Scribes decided to introduce some French and Latin into English spelling.A national standard for English writing wasn’t around so writing became different in different regions after the French invasion of England in 1066.The Great Vowel Shift changed the English long vowel sounds but kept the old spelling.I'm not a true fan of history, but check it: Why is English pronunciation so hard?
